Hello friends today we are discuss this question, the question is -On what issues did Lomov and Natalya quarrel at first? How did their argument come to an end? Or, What is the first argument about in the play? Does the argument come to a successsful conclusion?

In the play ‘The Proposal’ written by Anton Chekhov, Ivan Vassilevitch Lomov and Natalya Stepanovna’s first quarrel was regarding the ownership of Oxen Meadows. Lomov claimed that his aunt’s grandmother had given the free use of the meadows to the peasants of Natalya’s father’s grandfather for forty years and in return they had to make bricks for her. However, Natalya refused to believe it and declared the meadows to be her ancestral property. The argument converted to an ugly spat. Lomov started to palpitate and felt that he would faint. Thereafter he left their house in anger. But as soon as Natalya came to know from her father that Lomov had come with a marriage proposal, she mellowed down. She instructed her father to call him back. She apologized to Lomov and they settled the issue. In this way the first argument between them ended.
