Anton Chekhov draws a clear picture of the 19th century Russian society through his one-act play “The Proposal”. The society which Chekhov portrays in his play does not pay any attention to love and understanding. Outdated customs are given utmost importance. Therefore it is not an unknown fact that in such a society someone would marry to secure social and economic security. Marriage in such a society is nothing but a business deal. The playwright also shows how the landed gentry who owns most of the land exploits the landless peasants and had been doing so for generations. Forgetting the purpose of their existence, they enjoy the fruits of their labour. They engage themselves in futile occupations like hunting and racing dogs to pass their time. Thus Chekhov depicts the degeneration of the aristocratic society through this play.
