The speaker, Lomov, who has come to Chubukov’s house to propose his daughter for marriage, always suffers from nervousness and palpitations. When he expresses his desire to Chubukov he becomes extremely happy and plans to call Natalya. But Lomov is not very confident so he asks Chubukov if she will agree to his proposal.
After assuring Lomov about his daughter’s consent, Chubukov sends Natalya so that Lomov can propose her. But they start arguing, firstly over the ownership of Oxen Meadows and then over the Superiority of their respective dogs. When Lomov becomes unconscious due to the bitter altercation, Natalya shows extreme concern for him. After Lomov Chubukov intervenes and ordersins his senseed to her and at that very moment Natalya ultimately expresses her consent.
