“Shall I compare thee to a day?” is Sonnet 18 in Shakespeare’s sequence of 154 Sonnets. Like a typical Shakespearean sonnet, Sonnet 18 is written in 14 lines of iambic pentameter which ends with a rhyming couplet. It has three quatrains followed by a couplet and follows the rhyme scheme abab cdcd efef gg. This sonnet captures the three-quatrain-and-one- couplet model very well. One of the main features of a Shakespearean sonnet is that each quatrain depicts a different image or idea to express the main theme of the sonnet which the readers can also notice in Sonnet 18. In the first quatrain the poet establishes the young man’s superiority. In the second quatrain he describes the changing face of summer. In the third quatrain the poet bestows immortality to the young man through poetry. In the final couplet the poet highlights the eternal beauty of the young man. The themes which are integral part of Shakespearean sonnet like beauty, love, brevity of life and timelessness of poetry are beautifully captured in this sonnet.
