Comment on the improbability in the play ‘The Proposal’

Hello friends today we are discuss this question, the question is -Comment on the improbability in the play ‘The Proposal’

Improbability refers to unexpected happy ending. The ending of Chekov’s one-act play ‘The Proposal is unexpected and seems apparently a happy one. The two characters namely Lomov and Natalya who are supposed to get engaged without having anything in common behave in a strange and unanticipated way at the end of the play. Just to earn the status of a married girl, Natalya is ready to forgive Lomov. Their continuous quarrel throughout the play comes to a temporary halt when Chubukov ov forces them to get married. This makes the reader believe for a short span of time that the outcome of the incessant arguments between Lomov and Natalya is a happy and joyful one. Chubukov’s weird behaviour amuses the audience throughout the play. He supports her daughter in her arguments with Lomov. Therefore, the sudden change in Chubukov’s attitude and his involvement in materializing the engagement of Lomov and Natalya makes us look forward to a happy ending. A play like ‘The Proposal’ ending on a happy note is quite surprising to the readers because all the characters in the play are strange, weird and are poles apart from each other.
