Chubukov acts as a catalyst in the arguments involving Lomov and Natalya. Chekhov portrays Chubukov as a father troubled with the responsibility of finding a suitable match for his daughter. But knowing that Lomov has come with a marriage proposal for his daughter, he does not try to pacity Natalya who is unaware of Lomov’s actual intention behind the visit, instead he himself becomes a part of the two fierce arguments over silly issues. He alongwith his daughter drive Lomov crazy and force him to leave their house. For time. being he forgets about securing his daughter’s future and even warns Lomov to never set foot in his house again. He misbehaves with Lomov and even insults his family members in spite of being aware of the fact that Lomov is a prospective groom for his daughter. He fails to calm down Lomov and Natalya and even encourages the latter to the squabble.
