Hello friends today we are discuss this question, the question is -“That is the Grasshopper”-What is referred to by ‘that’? What does the poet mean to say? Why does the poet use capital letter in Grasshopper?
Here, that’ refers to the song of the Grasshopper.
In summer, all the birds get tired and their songs come to a halt. They seek refuge under the shade of the cooling trees. To continue the music of nature, the Grasshopper ‘takes the lead’ and keeps the music of nature alive, with his merry voice. The excessive heat of summer cannot deter his happiness and he keeps on singing until he gets tired.
The poet considers the Grasshopper as the poet of summer. Therefore he personifies the Grasshopper and uses capital letter to describe the role of the Grasshopper in greeting nature.
