Chubukov is unhappy. Lomov, Natalya and Chubukov get involved in a quarrel regarding the ownership of the Oxen Meadows. Lomov asserts that they are the lawful owner of the Oxen Meadows because his aunt’s grandmother gave the free use of the land to the peasants of Chubukov’s grandfather and they had used it for forty years. But Natalya does not believe what Lomov says and continues to argue with him along with her father. Soon Lomov becomes ill and leaves their house. But as soon as Natalya discovers Lomov’s actual purpose of visiting their house, she freaks out and requests her father to bring him back. This sudden change in Natalya’s behaviour makes Chubukov confused and unable to decide what to do, he wishes to die.
