But the girl failed to grasp the real meaning of the words. If she had been a bit more observed, she would have easily got the hint. But on the other hand the narrator instructed with the girl very tactfully and prevented her from knowing the truth.

Before stating this, the narrator thought that perhaps the girl had not noticed him because she was not playing attention. He thought that people who can see often overlook the essential whereas those who cannot see very little take in every minute detail with the help of their others sense organs.
