The soldier, lying peacefully in the midst of the sun-soaked bed of the green valley is a perfect picture of calmness and serenity. For a moment Mt appears that the soldier is sleeping in the lap of Nature, as he lies stretched in the thick bushes, with his tired feet cushioned by the wild flowers. The smile on his face is pure and innocent. The soothing rays of the sun seems to be providing him with the much- needed warmth. Ironically, the poet makes us realise in the concluding line, that the young soldier is not engaged in sleep, but actually is a victim of war. The bullet shots have made two holes in his body which serve as a repfinder that war results only in loss of life and property. It takes away the lives of youths before they reach their full bloom.
