In the final scene, Lomov faints due to excessive excitement because of the heated exchange with Natalya and Chubukov. Chubukov and Natalya believe for a moment that he is dead. Natalya pulls Lomov’s sleeve to see if he is really dead. She is shocked when Lomov does not move and shouts, “what have you done to me?” Chubukov is equally astonished. He shouts for water and lifts a tumbler to Lomov’s mouth. Chubukov thinking that Lomov is dead wants to kill himself because he feels that he might have missed the chance of getting rid of his daughter whom he considers as a burden. He blames his misfortune and calls out for a knife and pistol to kill himself. However, Lomov soon revives and Chubukov noticing that orders them to hurry up and get married.
