Lomov visits Chubukov’s house with the intention of proposing marriage to Natalya. But he forgets his actual purpose of visiting his neighbour’s house. He starts arguing with Natalya over the ownership of Oxen Meadows. Lomov declares that Oxen Meadows belong to them and also adds that his aunt’s grandmother gave the free use of Oxen Meadows to the peasants of Natalya’s father’s grandfather, in return for which they were to make bricks for his aunt’s grandmother. The farmers of her father’s grandfather had the free use of the meadows for forty years. But Natalya interrupts by saying that her grandfather and great-grandfather acknowledged that their land extended to Burnt Marsh which proves that Oxen Meadows were theirs and it has been this way for 300 years. Lomov cuts in and announces that he has legal documents of Oxen Meadows. Natalya, who is desperate to prove her point asserts that the meadows are not worth much to her, they only cost five dessiatins and are worth perhaps 300 roubles but she cannot stand unfairness. Lomov claims that he is acting on principle and if Natalya wants he will make a present of them. In this way the dispute continues.
