Chekhov portrays Lomov as a very nervous character. On hearing Lomov’s wish to marry Natalya, Chubukov gets elated and goes inside to call his daughter, leaving Lomov alone in the drawing-room. Lomov in his soliloquy confesses that this waiting period is always very critical and he is feeling as if he is going to appear for an examination.

Lomov came to such a conclusion because he was very tensed and not sure whether Natalya would agree to his proposal or not. He finds Natalya Stepanovna, the twenty-five year old daughter of Stepan Stepanovitch Chubukov to be appropriate. Lomov considers Natalya as his ideal match because she is an excellent housekeeper, not bad- looking, well-educated and moreover he wants to lead a quiet and regular life.
